SEO Audit Metrics: What to Track and What to Question
A useful SEO report connects a number to a decision. Before choosing metrics, agree which pages and customer actions matter to the business. The same dashboard can tell very different stories when it mixes branded searches, advice articles and enquiries for a priority service.
Begin with a page list and a reliable baseline
Choose the pages that explain your important services or product categories. Record their current URLs, availability, enquiry route and search evidence. Note whether tracking is complete. If a website has no reliable enquiry history, say so rather than estimating past performance.
A hypothetical Kolkata supplier might begin with one product category and its enquiry form. That is a manageable scope for finding defects, making changes and reviewing whether the customer journey improved.
Read impressions, clicks and click-through rate together
Search Console impressions describe visibility in search results; clicks record visits through those results. Click-through rate relates clicks to impressions. Review the query, page, device and period before interpreting a change. More visibility for a different set of queries can change the overall rate without showing that a particular title got worse.
Average position is an aggregate measure, not a promise of a fixed rank for every searcher. Google’s metric definitions explain the reporting rules and limitations.
Check whether the right pages can be discovered
Keep a list of priority URLs that return a successful response, use the intended canonical and remain available through internal links. Treat an unexpected redirect or indexing restriction as something to investigate. Do not assume every published page should be indexed; some pages have a supporting or duplicate role.
Use sample-level evidence in the report. Naming an affected URL makes it easier to validate the issue and confirm the fix later.
Measure useful enquiries with the business team
Where tracking is configured and validated, review enquiry completion alongside lead quality. Ask whether requests concern the right service and coverage area. Keep spam, duplicates and genuine prospects separate in the business review. A button click should not be reported as a confirmed sale.
Search and enquiry totals may come from different systems and measurement rules. Document those differences. A report should make uncertainty visible instead of forcing the numbers to match.
Track completed work and the next decision
Record accepted fixes, dates, owners and verification. A technically completed task and an observed business result are different stages. Allow enough time and data for review, and note seasonal demand, advertising or offer changes that may affect the comparison.
Choose a manageable review rhythm based on how much useful data the site receives. Rewriting the plan after every small daily movement can hide the effect of changes already made.
